1989 – Dave Klassen

Dave describes his first involvement with Athletes in Action and his passion for the ministry:

Rushia (my wife) and I came to Vancouver to finish off our teaching degrees at Simon Fraser University, intent on returning to the north to work full time. I heard they were having tryouts for the men’s basketball team, so I decided to give it a try. I had played years earlier in college, but I thought I was too old for it now and expected to get cut. I made it right to the end. One of the coaches approached me and asked if I would be interested in being captain of the junior varsity team, helping develop some of the younger guys. He didn’t even have it out of his mouth before I said yes.

Three years earlier, I had committed my life to Christ. Now looking for a Christian connection, I left my name at the Campus Crusade for Christ booth during clubs week.

The previous summer, I had just finished reading a book about Athletes in Action called “More than a Game.” I was intrigued and inspired by the ministry and their impact. I wished I’d known about these guys when I was younger, but I put it at the back of my mind as I figured that part of my life was over. Then I got the strangest call. A staff member from AIA wanted to meet with me; they had a ministry on our campus and worked with athletes on the sports teams. “You gotta be kidding me?” I thought. I felt this must be from God, so I got involved. Over the next year I was trained to share my faith, became a bible study leader, and was connected with the AIA summer sport camps at Trinity Western University. In my first week as a camp coach, I led two students to Christ while coaching the game I loved: basketball. I felt like I was ripping off AIA. “If people only knew how much fun I was having, there’s no way I’d get paid for this.”
