1986 – Mike Woodard

Mike experiences ministry “on the edge” and learns more about the incredible character of God:

One thing the ministry has always done was push me out into the arena of the unknown. It’s the area of faith, of living on the edge. So I did this project in India during 1986 and had a specific picture of what I wanted to do; I was to lead the team in showing the Jesus Film. We started off in LA and loaded up with all sorts of recording equipment. The next morning, Blair, who was supposed to lead the project in India, bailed because he had an abscessed tooth and put me in charge of the project. I had never been on an international project! So I’m thinking that this was not going to way I envisioned.

Once we got to Thailand, I had to run the orientation. I started checking all the details and confirming the flights. I hoped this was a cheap flight because we started in Edmonton, went to LA, stopped in Anchorage to refuel, stopped in Seoul, then to Bangkok, then to Columbo and then into India. When we got to Colombo, I had to make sure everyone was out of bed and at the airport by the specified time. But the airport wasn’t open.

It turns out that there was a blown up jet on the runway. Security was crazy as we went through the security line. Once we got through, we found out we weren’t re-confirmed for our flight so we were all bumped off the flight. Noel Draper was trying to persuade the flight person to let us on the flight. Finally, they said, “OK, you have tied up the whole security system, we’re going to let you get on this flight except for one person because there is something wrong with their ticket.” That person turned out to be Noel. Noel said to the flight person, “I am one of the leaders, I have to go!” They even let him on. Thank goodness.

It was the craziest thing showing the Jesus Film in the tea-growing hills of Kerala. It was stunning, and an amazing time to be on the project. I think I was really gripped with the dramatic nature of Christ versus all the Hindu gods. We did a tour of one of the temples and learned of the character of the gods. The tour guide was explaining how to appease the gods because you don’t want to provoke them or else they’ll do nasty things to you. I thought, “Wow, here is such a dramatic character difference. We were showing the Jesus Film about this God who came to die for them…there is no comparison to the Hindu gods!”
