Hugh describes his experience with Josh McDowell and the work they did together:
I sold a brand new car so I could pay for my first year at UBC. I then found out Josh McDowell was assigned to be the campus director at UBC. With Josh at UBC, it was a very different set of circumstances. He was in the middle of starting Evidence That Demands a Verdict and so he was in the midst of doing a lot of different things. He also came and taught a Sunday School class at our church college and career class. In the fall of 1966, he decided we should take a number of kids to Arrowhead Springs for Christmas conference. He got on a plane and got himself a meeting with Walter Knotts from Knotts Berry Farm. He got $10,000 out of Walter, and the next thing you know, we’ve signed up 300 kids to go to Arrowhead. We chartered three greyhound buses, and a whole bunch of teachers and others from Trinity College piled in cars and spent a week in Arrowhead Springs between Christmas and into New Years.
