1986 – Rod Alm

Rod Alm moved from the University of British Columbia to the University of Saskatchewan: where he and others would help in the process of integrating Campus Crusade for Christ International into the Catholic world.

The year of 1986-1987 at the University of Saskatchewan, we had over 200 students involved in small group discipleship with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC). Many from that first wave of U of S graduates went into the ministry. Andre and Angele Regnier were two outstanding students who seemed to be made for the ministry. I challenged them to join the CCC staff. Andre and Angele were Catholics who had intimate personal relationships with Christ. They asked if they would have to leave the Catholic church to join CCC. I said, “I don’t think so, but is it possible for you to find support for an evangelical cause from within the Catholic church?” They proved over time that there is substantial support for a compelling evangelical cause. So the idea of a Catholic ‘Campus Crusade’ style of ministry to university students was birthed and blossomed into a global force for Christ.

I introduced Angele and Andre to our Canadian CCC President Marvin Kehler and Marvin’s special projects assistant Bob Kraemer. Marvin obtained permission for CCC International materials to be modified to reach and disciple Catholic youth. The Canadian Catholic Bishops brought Andre and Angele Regnier and Catholic Campus Outreach (CCO) to the attention of Pope John Paul II.  When John Paul II launched the World Youth Day movement he asked CCO to train Catholic youth workers to help evangelize the millions of Catholic young people who flocked to the World Youth Days. A booklet entitled ‘The Ultimate Relationship’ was created by CCO and has led millions of Catholic youth to Christ. CCC Canada also provided hundreds of thousands of copies of the ‘Jesus’ DVD in dozens of languages for distribution at the World Youth Days.
