Millions of adults across Canada and North America struggle with severe social anxiety, neurodivergence, depression, or past church hurt, and rarely leave their rooms. Therefore, they are untouchable by traditional mission strategies.

For years, many of their loved ones have prayed, "Lord, get them out of that room and back to real life."

My mission is answering a different prayer: "Lord, send a Christian who understands them right into their room."

Being a Digital Strategist

Every day I work on the digital frontlines where millions spend their lives:

• Cultivating Safe Digital Communities: Designing and moderating healthy, Christ-centered online spaces that offer genuine connection, peer support, and direct pastoral care.

• Training Digital Missionaries: Mentoring Christian content creators and community leaders to prevent burnout, sustain spiritual health, and connect their online ministry to the local church.

• Create Mission-Driven Media: Hosting live interactive broadcasts, producing discipleship resources, and equipping believers to share the Gospel in online subcultures.

For years, as I crested the hill going into Ottawa - especially at night - I’d often get tears in my eyes. As the cityscape came into view, each of the little window lights seemed to represent someone I’d never be able to reach with God’s love or help as their pastor. There was a profound ache inside me to reach the people behind closed doors who, for however many reasons, I would never meet, would never call for help, and certainly never enter a church.

Then, after 16+ years of full-time solo pastoral ministry, God unmistakably called me into digital missions.

When I started, I had a plan: be “normal.” Build a kind, safe, entertaining, variety channel for the lost and lonely. A Christian but not a “preacher.” A counsellor but not a “pro.” I thought it would be best to leave my title behind and just be a fellow citizen in the online neighbourhood. I thought people wouldn’t connect to “Pastor Al,” so I decided to be “XtianNinja” instead.

I was wrong.

What happened next was twofold.

First, God used that channel to build a thriving, safe digital community for the neurodivergent, socially isolated, and hurting adults I used to mourn over on the hill into Ottawa. I'd finally found a way to reach them, give them peer support, and direct pastoral care.

But simultaneously, I realized the wider digital world was full of other Christian creators who were spiritually starving. They had no training, no church family, and no one to tell them that what they were doing actually mattered. I kept hearing the same things:

- “I didn’t even know other Christians streamed!”

- “I told my pastor I wanted to stream as a ministry, but they discouraged me. So I left.”

- “Wait, you’re a pastor AND a creator? I need that.”

- “I don’t have a church... can you be my pastor?”

My heart broke. I realized God wasn’t calling me to shelf the leadership and organizational development part of me; He was saying, “Just as you did for years, pastor these creators, too.”

Today, my calling encompasses both digital communities and the creators who minister there. I continue to actively shepherd my own frontline digital community for the lonely and overlooked. Alongside that, I work to equip a generation of digital missionaries to create safe digital spaces that multiplies our impact so that no one behind those lit windows has to be out of reach again.
