1978 – Frank Thoutenhoofd

Frank shares his first experience with Athletes in Action, his decision to follow Jesus, and his decision to come on staff with AIA.

I attended the University of Calgary and played on the basketball team. Michael Horner was a teammate, and we developed a friendship playing basketball every day to get better. An American Athletes in Action team came through Alberta. They shared testimonies during halftime, and Michael told his story which was very unusual. During the team meeting after the game, I was asking all of the questions of AIA. It really was the spirit of God talking to me because I had very little spiritual background.

One of the AIA players invited me out for breakfast the next morning and we chatted for a long time. They followed up with me, and I started going to the MOB meetings. About three months later, I was sitting on the side of the student union building. I had the Holy Spirit booklet with me, and I read through it and prayed to receive Christ. It was wonderful. People talk about the burden leaving, and the feeling of euphoria. I had euphoria, no question about it. It was a done deal! They shared the gospel and how we can talk with God the way we talk with each other. They talked about eternal life, and I thought to myself “if that is true, what a deal!”

Then an AIA U.S. basketball team came to Canada, and I got a phone call from Bob Kraemer asking if I wanted to be an assistant coach. I’m normally a very calculating person, but my wife says it was one of the fastest decisions I made in my life.
