1967 – Gordon Volkman

Gordon recalls the staff members who influenced his journey with Campus Crusade for Christ and his calling to be a part of the ministry.

The year was 1967, my senior year at the University of Alberta. At this point in my life, my knowledge of Campus Crusade for Christ was what I had read in a Moddy Monthly magazine.

An old friend informed me about two transfer students from UBC who wanted to start CCC ministry at U of A. Those two transfer students were none other than Harvey Wilkie and Hugh Little. I got involved with the campus ministry and found myself studying the Word as never before, sharing my faith, leading an Action Group, and getting involved in Church Speak Teams. I sensed a meaning and purpose in my life I had never had before.

The director of Campus Crusade for Christ, Ken Berven, came to do some training in Edmonton, and that was when he challenged me to join on staff. I then decided to attend the Institute of Biblical Studies at Arrowhead Springs in the summer of 1968. After my training and raising support, I went to the University of British Columbia and worked with Ron Cumberdale, who was my trainer, for three months. We saw some great things begin to happen at UBC and SFU in a very short time. I was then asked to go back to Calgary to raise more support and work at the newly opened CCC ministry at the University of Calgary where I would spend the next 4 years working.
